Tujereng Village

Tujereng, The Gambia

Tujereng, The Gambia

THE COMMUNITY

Tujereng is a coastal village in The Gambia, a country that stands as the smallest on the African continent — yet rich in heritage, oral tradition, and communal values. Nestled along the Atlantic coast, Tujereng is known for its vibrant cultural life, strong intergenerational bonds, and deeply rooted storytelling practices.

As part of Aldeas, Tujereng brings an essential voice to the global mosaic of the project. Here, stories are passed from elder to youth in rhythm, song, and memory. The community’s participation adds a dimension of continuity and resilience, rooted in local wisdom and collective imagination. Through cinema, the people of Tujereng are not only documenting their lives — they are shaping how they are remembered.

Why establish a film community in Tujereng?

The Gambia is the smallest country on the African mainland — a narrow strip of land following the Gambia River. Yet as Pope Francis reminds us, “in what is small lies the greatness of the human spirit.” That belief echoes throughout Tujereng, where community, memory, and voice converge with dignity and creativity.

By establishing a film community in Tujereng, Aldeas brings visibility to voices that are often unheard, allowing local residents — especially youth — to reclaim their narratives through image and sound. The intergenerational exchange at the heart of the project enables stories of migration, ancestry, resilience, and joy to come alive in ways both deeply rooted and universally resonant.

Cinema here becomes more than art — it is encounter, remembrance, and a celebration of identity.
